Here is an overview of some key elements to learn how to communicate better.
Active listening and empathy
Did you know that, on average, our interlocutors retain only 33% of what we say to them? (adapted from "Reaching Out" by David H. Johnson, 2003). The most important element for communication that is effective is knowing how to LISTEN. Active listening builds trust and allows your interlocutor to honestly explore their difficulties.
Be present with your body
When we communicate, there are 3 main dimensions in our interactions, the impact of which varies depending on the person we interact with. Research (Albert Mehrabian's theory) shows that when we communicate, 55% of our message is conveyed through non-verbal (body language, appearance, gestures, facial expression, eye contact.) language, while 38% of transmitted by tone of voice (volume, speed, flow, rhythm) and only 5% of the message is carried by words (what you say).
Create quality relationships
To communicate is, first and foremost, to share, respect and understand the other in order to convey or receive messages. In any communication, our reaction is 80% a response to our relationship with our interlocutor, hence the importance of our ability to know how to create bonds with people. Communication can be improved at any time.
Structure your messages
You need to be clear about what you want and how to phrase it. It is often best to keep your statements simple and concise. Consider applying the famous 5W+H journalistic rule to your speech: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.
Practice constructive feedback
Most often, in the professional environment, we are uncertain of where we stand within a team, how we are perceived by our manager, our colleagues, our subordinates, what we do well and what needs to be improved... These questions can create a certain emotional insecurity, which is usually not beneficial to everyone's performance and development.
